MONTREAL – Aboriginal leaders are concerned about the potential consequences of legalizing cannabis on their communities.

In an interview with La Presse canadienne, the head of the Assembly of First Nations of Quebec and Labrador (AFNQL), Ghislain Picard, did not hide that its members are extremely concerned about this legislation.

«It scares the communities and it is very clearly of concern», he said.

He argued that indigenous communities are already dealing with a problem of over-consumption of drugs that can only be amplified by legalization.

«The bill will add to the already existing burden of narcotics control because we have police services that are under-equipped, we have a proportion of young people that is much larger than anywhere else in Quebec. That’s all part of the considerations for aboriginal leaders» said Picard.
